A-Rod Kicking Early Season A-ss

Anyone else out there pleasantly surprised (read: shocked) by A-Rod so far this season? The man has (as of this minute) 9 HRs and 19 Hits in 13 Games, for a .365 average. He has hit safely in every game so far this season. At this pace (which is almost unthinkable) he would have 112 HRs and 236 Hits by the end of the season. The home run thing is ludicrous--unless he starts going to the same chemists as Bonds, Sosa, McGwire, et al.--but as for the hits, he could do it. He hit 213 in 1998 for Seattle, and the record is 262 by Ichiro Suzuki in 2004. But that's not the point...

The point is A-Rod is making it happen. My memory isn't good enough to say whether he's jumped out to great starts like this in prior seasons, but I know he's jumped out to far, far worse ones. He's earning his keep, enough for two players, so far this season. The real test will come in two months, three months, FOUR months, to see if he can keep up the torrid pace and re-endear himself to New York (See Entry Entitled "A-Rod on the Clock"), but he's setting out to a good start.

Though I have no particular affinity for the Yanko's, and A-Rod has never been more than a highly-paid curiousity to me, I'm rooting for him to have a hell of season, because its more fun to watch and read about. Go on, man...

i reiterate a story over and over and over again about a young cousin of mine who loved baseball. he was fortunate enough to have his father arrange for him to have a meeting of some sort with a well known pitcher in the major leagues. i cant recall the age of my cousin when this happenend but he was younger than ten i believe. anyhoo, the meeting went something like this. 'hi mr.baseball man, my name is grant, im a big fan, how can i be a better baseball player??' 'practice' 'oh, ok, what do you like to do for fun' 'play baseball' and so the conversation went on with an excited boy getting monotone answeres from a star athelete. after the dream meeting was over with the star baseball player, the pre ten year old told his father, 'gee dad, mr.baseball was really dumb'

a young child with enough smarts to realize the athelete is dumb as a rock is quite embarassing for sports. let us never be confused that these individuals are great at sports which does not make them spokesman for cultural issues, social issues, political issues or any issues. they are pro atheletes and can talk about sports. but lets not glorify these individuals beyond there realm of atheletic capability. if we want to do that, lets all praise HUGH HEFNER, the only stud whom mere mortals can only bow in his presence. all hail HUGH!!!!
