Just Another Day?

I was sitting in the coffee shop this morning, when I overheard a customer at the register. The barista asked him: "How's your day going?" and he said: "You know, it's just another day."

This struck me for some reason.

Part of me can understand what he meant. As in... "there is nothing particularly odd or different about this day, I have the same stuff to do, nothing in my life has changed, I feel no better or worse about my life than yesterday," etc. Sure. We can all understand this attitude. However...

...saying it's "just another day" could not be further from the truth. Today is September 5th, 2019 A.D. A date that will never, ever come again. Furthermore, in the ever advancing train of seconds, days, weeks, months, years that is your life, today is most certainly a day that will never be repeated. It might look like a lot of other days you've had, but it is not. It's a once in a lifetime (literally) chance to do something, learn something, build something, write something, touch someone's life, get better at something, experience something new, meet someone new, feel something new, etc. etc. etc.

Today is not "just another day." Today is the day.

We like to fool ourselves into thinking we have time. We count the number of years we have left. "Oh, I'm 40 years old. I have at least another 30 years left..." Wrong. You've never had anything but today, now, and even that is not guaranteed.

Thus, why do we delay our happiness, or put off the things we want to do, until another time? We have to act as if we might conceivably live a lot longer, sure. We cannot spend everything in our bank accounts just for the sake of "living for today." No. That's not correct, either.

But we can start today on making ourselves, our lives, into what we want them to be. Are you waiting until you "retire" in order to learn to windsurf? Don't wait. You may not get old enough to retire. Are you dreaming of writing a novel, but just can't "find the time." You have the time, trust me. Make it a priority and do it. Are you repeatedly being told to lose weight for the sake of your health? There is something you can do about that (or not do)  right now that will aid you toward your goal. Is there someone in your life you hold a grudge against, but just want to reach out and clear the air? Guess what...you will never have any other moment to work with than now. It has never been "tomorrow." It has never been "yesterday." It has only ever been "today." Think about that.

So you see, today is not "just another day." Far from it. There has never been and will never been another day like today. If you look around you, 1,000 unique things are happening in your life that will never happen again. However you take advantage of that, based on what you want to do in your life, is up to you. But get busy. There is no time like the present...because there is no other time, period!
