Thai Cuisine (Bloomfield)

Any restaurant who has the guts to simply name themselves after what they serve immediately gets a look from me. You would have to be pretty damned sure of yourself to just call your restaurant "Pizza" or "Mexican Food." And after having eaten there once, I can tell you: Thai Cuisine has a right to be sure about themselves, because they serve amazing Thai cuisine.

The almost comically-straightforward name of Thai Cuisine makes me think back nostalgically to the now-defunct restaurant called simply "Thai Place," which stood on Walnut St. in Shadyside for at least 20 years (the site of what is now Acorn), and which most people mistakenly referred to as "Thai Palace." No, the name was simply Thai Place, and -- like Thai Cuisine -- all they did was serve amazing Thai food. Thai Cuisine, on the other hand, is very much still in business.

On Saturday night, after stopping in at Lot 17 to see if we could get a seat (we couldn't), the warm glow of Thai Cuisine's neon lights drew us in from the cold November chill. I got the shrimp tempura, Tom Yum soup with vegetables, and the Musman curry. All of which were amazing, especially the curry which -- if anyone has ever had a bowl of hot Thai curry on a cold night you will understand -- was singlehandedly responsible for helping me stave off a cold.

This hidden Bloomfield gem (maybe it's not "hidden" but I never knew about it until now) is right across the street from Caliente Draft house or up the just a couple doors from Lot 17. Try it sometime. You will not regret it.
